The Brightest Light

John 1: 4-8, 9, 10, 14a

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light….The One who is the true Light was coming into the world. He came into the very world He created, but the world didn’t recognize Him. and even they rejected Him….so the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory.”

So today, look past the twinkle and sparkle of the festive decor and notice the brightest light of the Advent season! The One True Light that shines brighter than them all ~ brighter than all the rest and even brighter than the star that came to rest over the stable to announce His royal, heavenly birth. Yeah, the Messiah a gift from Heaven, was promised to a hurting world and He came as light and hope and life and flesh and walked among us! His light and His word lights our way, through this wretched world and through the darkness and the unknown because He Himself is the Light and in Him there is no darkness at all as 1 John 1: 5 reminds us, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.”

If we abide in Him and He in us, our pathway is illuminated by this One who came to light our way and show us His glory. So, beautiful soul, if you’ve seen the glory of His Light, praise the God who graced you with favour and remember to pray diligently for those who haven’t yet recognized Him or accepted Him. Pray for those who have yet to be awakened to the wonder of His unconditional love and forever faithfulness. Pray for them to be rallied and quickened to new light and new life in Christ, as we share the joy of the season through the message of Light, Hope and unconditional love to those around us.

The Final Straw

Advent
Advent

Ok, so the journey is long and the steps are difficult and the end just doesn’t seem to be in view. Don’t we just trudge along sometimes with head down and heart heavy and steps weary? I can only imagine a couple that did the same as they journeyed to Bethlehem for their government duties with taxes to pay and deadlines to meet and bones just as weary as ours! Yet with strength waning and with great apprehension amidst simple trust, nagging deep within their souls ~ they made their way. Yeah, Joseph the obedient through thick and thin, and Mary ~ heavy with child ~ the Savior of the World, experiencing events so complex and hard to comprehend they made their way ~ just because it was God’s plan and they were a part of it. Sometimes His plans are not easy, but it was a beautiful plan, a plan for saving the world and it had to be and it had to be just “precise” in its timing and perfect right down to the last straw.

No room, and all alone ~ but no! Not alone! Not even for a second, because God was guiding every lonely step of the way, even through their weariness. So beautiful weary you with soul heavy, and heart aching know that your steps are ordered by this same sovereign God that led the weary couple to Bethlehem! He directs with events so perfectly timed that we could never figure them out. He unravels the mess, the complications, the unanswered questions, the apprehension, and the fear right down to the final straw, where you feel like throwing in the towel. So don’t do it! He’s got it! Whatever has you bound in worry, Don’t give up! Mary went through what she went through for the ultimate purpose of delivering Christ to the world and presented us with a Savior and Yeah, a beautiful example for us.

So, our purpose in this life is to do the same through our struggles and our situations! Whatever difficulty is heavy on your plate this advent season, Let God lead you through it with precision as you deliver Christ to a needy world, through your faith and trust and joy even in the difficult.

John 16: 33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

As believers, we talk a lot about a deeper, greater joy than what the world and its empty pleasures have to offer. We speak of our relationship with the Lord as being the joy that brings strength even amidst sad, hard or difficult circumstances and situations that we may be faced with. Yet we still can feel down or discouraged or depressed at times. Just what is it, that we speak of when we talk of this joy, that sometimes seems so illusive? John knew of it as he penned the words in our scripture verse of today, but Paul also knew of it in his prison cell, when instead of counting the wrongs done to him, he counted the blessings that God had given him. What blessings? Perhaps the blessing of his changed, transformed life. He had experienced a dramatic change on the road to Damascus that he couldn’t deny. It certainly didn’t take away his problems but it did give him a new life and a new direction, even though it wasn’t a bed of roses. Instead of seeking people to destroy, he sought people to save by sharing the gospel message of God’s truth. His transformed life and relationship with Christ brought joy in the midst of persecution, trouble and upheaval because of an underlying, steadfast hope of eternal life at the finish line. When this victorious hope is our fundamental, solid base for our faith we are grounded in the victorious Lord who has overcome death and the grave. What victory is ours then, even when we feel discouragement or disappointment? When our faith in God is our grounding in life, it instills a certain peace that transcends all of our understanding and even when things go wrong, this God-given peace operates on default as we place our trust in the Sovereign God who is in control. What’s your prison today? Is there something that has you bound, robbing you of joy? Paul was thrown into a literal prison, but we can put ourselves in chains, just because of our own rebellion and selfishness. Or perhaps our prison is one of poor health, unemployment, addictions or other things that plague us and from which we can’t escape. God didn’t promise to take the problem away but He did promise to be with us in them. He alone can free us from the past and set us on a new road of direction just as He did for Paul. As we close the curtains on another year, do you know Him as your Savior? Who else can you trust other than the One who knit you together? The One who called the world into order with His word alone. The One who hung the stars and the moon and called the boundaries of the oceans into place?

He is your best choice as you begin a New Year and find peace amidst the uncertainties that lurk ahead. It may not be a bed of roses, but your default will be grounded on Christ.

“I said to a man who stood at the gate of the year, ‘Give me a light that I may go out into the darkness.’ He said to me, ‘Step out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than a light, and safer than a known way.’ ” A quote by Minnie Louise Haskins.
