Lay Down The Baggage

Come with me for a moment to the inn. You’ve travelled a long road and a difficult one. Your heart is heavy and your soul laden with care. Mary’s journey was difficult too as she carried the heavy load of a babe, the Savior of the world, about to be delivered. Can you imagine the ridicule she must have taken from those who knew her? The offences she felt along the way? The rejection she must have faced in the event of God’s calling on her life. Oh yeah, her journey was difficult and the road to Bethlehem was painful, but that was just the way it had to go down so that God could work His plan. See the inn? See how busy it is? See the baggage left in heaps by so many travellers, so weary, so worn, so anxious to get lodging for their weary bodies and aching feet? Mary needed it too and imagine Joseph, caring so deeply for her but being told,

“Sorry, there’s not a room left here. All I can do is show you a stable.”A pieced together shack lined with straw for the animals? Yeah, but it was shelter for the night and a place to lay a couple of weary heads, and hearts and minds, so it was all good.

Have you been there at all? To a place that doesn’t offer much protection or stability? A place of vulnerability? A place where hurt runs deep? A place everyone has the spotlight but you or maybe the critical spotlight is on you and only you and it’s not comfortable because what been said is not true? Have you been there? Where everyone has the shelter but you? Ah, beautiful soul, And then ~ there’s your baggage! That dreadful baggage! That dreadful, heavy load you’ve carried from pillar to post for so long! It’s overwhelming too, isn’t it? But there’s hardly a place to put it down for the night except on a dirty, mud floor in the midst of straw? But really, beautiful one, just lay it down, even there. Give it up! Let it go! Forget it! And forgive it! ~ The journey’s over for now! It’s time to find a quiet moment’s rest for a few hours. Something new is about to happen.

Mary and Joseph put it down and rested there on that floor of mud and straw and the Savior of the world, their Savior, began there! It’s there they met Him face to face. It’s there where God became flesh in that obscure, desolate place and you got to know, He’s still there today ~ in all the places of broken, hurt, pain, insecurity, nothingness, emptiness, loneliness, ridicule and rejection. If that’s where you find yourself on this day in real life and in real-time, He’s there with you. You can know, He’s been there, done that, and knows your hurt. He came to light the darkness, mend the broken, heal the pain, forgive the sin, save the sinner and bless the soul. He desires to give you all that you need, right here on the mud floor, at the inn of rejection and perhaps bitterness this day. Rest there, in the stable with Him and let Him show you the way out to victory in this celebration of Advent! Aren’t we thankful for a Savior who left the glories of heaven to be born in such a lowly place in order to reach out into all the lowly places around a world in need?

1 John 4: 1  “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.”

Matthew 1:21  “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

New Year’s Resolution

New Year's Resolution
New Year’s Resolution

So here we sit with maybe some disappointments about the whole last year and maybe you thought you left the old baggage at the 20.15 terminal but it beat you to the 20.16 gate didn’t it? It arrived before you did and so here you sit on the brink of the first day of a new year and it’s the same old, same old. Wouldn’t you just know it? That’s because bad news travels fast, bondage doesn’t break easily and old habits die-hard.

Some things just didn’t go as planned and some things were left undone and some prayers weren’t answered and some things we just wish were different somehow. But they’re not, so ~ what do you do with that? Hey, you! There are things that we just can’t undo and some things that just can’t be made different by us. Those things we have to accept and place into God’s hand for good keeping. Habits? We can make our new resolutions and begin with every good intention to change, but the old stuff creeps back in as “Self” creeps off the altar of sacrifice. The loose end stuff creeps in to leave us reeling in guilt or fear or insecurity and disappointment and so perplexity reigns instead of peace and what do we do with that?
David knew all too well the evil about him, and invokes God’ s help while praising His character. He knew how to pray to our God of mercy and compassion. “Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help. Protect me, for I am devoted to You. Save me, for I serve You and trust You. Be merciful to me O Lord…..O Lord, You are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for Your help.” Psalm 86: 1,2,3a,5

So, beautiful soul, ask for God’s help as David did. Pray to our faithful God who understands all the chaos of your heart and knows about that baggage that haunts you even into the New Year. Pray David’s prayer or pray a personal prayer on this brand new day of a brand new year. Open the windows wide on 2016 and without a speck of fear or disappointment or frustration breathe in the fresh air and newness of life.

A new resolution? Yeah, for sure! Go ahead and let go of the past and step into peace with God.

I can choose to dwell on my insecurities, my weaknesses, my hurts, disappointments, my frustrations and the failures of my past, allowing the enemy to crush me under the weight of their load, or I can lay them at the foot of the cross with a broken spirit, stand back and watch God make beauty out of ashes as He weaves His golden threads in, around, over and through the confusion of my broken dreams. God doesn’t want my perfection, He only desires a humble, repentant and willing heart. His desire is to pour His unconditional love and grace upon me to bless me, and give me peace, but He won’t control me. He gives me the freedom to choose “His life” over the enemy’s death. The choice is up to me. ~k

Begin again and watch God do something new!

“Do not call to mind the former things, Or ponder things of the past. “Behold, I will do something new, Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it? I will even make a roadway in the wilderness, Rivers in the desert.”
Isaiah 14: 18 – 19

A New Thing

A new thing? How about emerging with wings?
A new thing? How about emerging with wings?

“Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43: 19

Don’t you love it; this wonderful promise from the Lord your Holy One, Israel’s Creator and King ~ Verse 15? “I am the Lord who opened a way through the waters, making a dry path through the sea….but forget all that ~ it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See I have already begun, do you not see it? I will make a pathway through the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”
An awesome promise from the Lord our God for us right now in this moment, this day, this month, this year. I especially like the part about the “New thing.” Don’t you? Whatever God has done in the past that rocked your world and turned it upside down with wonder and miracles and healing, is nothing compared to what He’s about to do, can do, and will do, if we just ask with a believing heart.

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So beautiful soul ~ needing something new today? I’m sure we could all use a heap of “new” and wonderful and couldn’t we handle the awesomeness of watching our Red Sea part, making a way for us to cross over into God’s promises fulfilled? Well ~ God is faithful! As He led the Israelites through the wilderness He leads us! He’s our life source, our life preserver, our provider, our sustainer, our healer, our counsellor, our Savior and our Lord. Let’s not miss the new thing He’s about to open up to us by living in past glories, victories or even those devastating past failures where it so easy to wallow and get off course. There is more than all of that ~ and our sovereign God holds it for us. Open your mind and your heart to the “New” that He has in His divine, Mastermind! Be obedient! Be trusting! Be faithful! Be hopeful and watch and pray!
