The Inn

Advent
Advent

Come with me for a moment to The inn. You’ve travelled a long road and a difficult one. Your heart is heavy and your soul laden with care. Mary’s journey was difficult too as she carried the heavy load of a babe, the Saviour of the world, about to be delivered. Can you imagine the ridicule she must have taken from those who knew her? The rejection that she must have faced in the event of God’s calling on her life. Oh yeah, her journey was difficult and the road to Bethlehem was painful, but that was just the way it had to go down.

See the inn? See how busy it is? See the baggage left in heaps by so many travellers, so weary, so worn, so anxious to get lodging for their weary bodies and aching feet? Mary needed it too and imagine Joseph, caring so deeply for her but being told, “Sorry, there’s not a room left here. All I can do is show you a stable.” A pieced together shack laden with straw for the animals? Yeah, but it was shelter for the night and a place to lay a couple of weary heads, and hearts and minds, so it was all good. Have you been there at all? To a place that doesn’t offer much protection or stability? A place where everyone else has the spotlight but you? Where everyone has the shelter but you? And then ~ there’s your baggage! It’s heavy too isn’t it? But there’s hardly a place to put it down for the night except on a mud floor in the midst of straw? But really, beautiful soul, just lay it down, even there. Give it up! Let it go! Forget it ~ the journey is over now! It’s time to find rest for a few hours. Mary and Joseph put their baggage down and rested on that floor of mud and the Savior of the world, their Savior began there! It’s there they met Him face to face. It’s there God became flesh in that obscure, desolate place and you got to know, He’s still there today ~ in all the places of insecurity, nothingness, emptiness, loneliness, ridicule and rejection. If that’s where you find yourself on this day in real-life and real-time, He’s there with you! He’s been there, done that, and knows your hurt. He came to light the darkness, heal the pain, forgive the sin, save the sinner and bless the soul and take the baggage. He desires to give you all that you need, right here at the inn of rejection and perhaps bitterness, or maybe even anger and pain today. Take your place in the stable with Him and let Him show you the way out to victory in this glorious celebration of Advent! Aren’t we thankful for a Savior who left the glories of heaven to be born in such a lowly place, in order to reach out to all the lowly people and places in a world of need?
Oh yeah, you gotta know we are!

1 John 4: 14
“And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.”

Matthew 1:21
“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins

Beyond Thanksgiving

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

Our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend is met with bleak news headlines and fb posts as I scroll through the pages. Wars and rumours of wars. Bombings before peace rallies and more deaths and more threats and more loss and more killings and more war and on and on it goes. It’s all so out of control and anything but stable in these precarious days of unknowns! And here it is Thanksgiving! How do we celebrate with thankful hearts? How do we praise God without guilt in these times of distress surrounding us? It’s easy to be thankful when we have safety and food and shelter and so much to be thankful for isn’t it? All that we have seems a little selfish doesn’t it? Seems a little off and out of whack for us in our land of plenty to be celebrating with feasts of turkey; stuffing our faces with food fit for kings when brothers and sisters are fighting for life itself and hiding from enemies to stay alive in their danger zones.

Out of hearts of compassion we can pray for the ruined and the people and lands and the hurting and the lost. We can rid ourselves of stubborn, selfish attitudes and realize that yes, we are blessed with a whole heap of good stuff and yes beyond measure too! We have so much and yet we complain when we don’t get what we want or when it gets tough and we meet with hardships and bumps in the road. Let’s remember dear ones, to be thankful to a Sovereign, all seeing, all knowing God who loves the world but hates the sin that brings the death. Let’s be thankful for His provision of salvation to a lost and dying world and let’s bring those in danger, fleeing for their lives, and struggling to survive before the Lord, every time we feel blessed of God and yeah for every complaint of ours, catch it off guard and stop it it’s tracks long enough to pray for those less fortunate in lands and countries of pain and not so plenty! God cares for them too and sees their hurt and knows their pain. Let’s make Thanksgiving truly count and yeah ~ be thankful for our stuff but let’s truly catch His vision for the hurting and the ruined and the lost this Thanksgiving! Intercede for them! Lift them up to His throne of grace as He brings them into your heart and into your beautiful soul.

Psalm 18:2
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Psalm 34:18
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Romans 8:18
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Messed Up World

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So some days are just messy aren’t they? The whole worlds in a mess and so is yours! You do your best and it’s not good enough. The things you really try to make a difference in just don’t go well at all and instead of having any kind of positive impact for improvement, it’s perceived by most as going the wrong way on a one way street leaving you labelled with no sense at all. What’s up with that, other than you’re the one always in the minority, even when standing for the good? You stand for the right and end up going left and it’s all so disheartening when your only hope caves in on your already depleted emotions, leaving you feeling as dusty as the lonely road you’ve just travelled. Where to from here?

Well, I love David’s words in Psalm 31:19, “How great is your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in You. In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; and in your dwelling you keep them safe from the strife of tongues.”

So ~ beautiful soul, take heart and find healing and reprieve in God’s refuge! Yes, even in your messed up world, He has good things in store and provides safety from the weary strife of the day, and the perilous arrows that fly at you from all directions. Yes, God has you and your “Not Good Enough” and your “Just Bad” moments when your right is left and it’s just all wrong. When no one else even cares or tries to understand or get it!

Come apart from the evil of the world and your own messy world and enter into a sweet, peace place ~ a special place designed by God for those who fear Him and stand for the right! There’s no place quite like it for finding a calm assurance that it’s all ok because He’s got it and that your ok because He’s got you and in the place of refuge He tucks hope just for His own! And those are comforting thoughts in a fragile world that seems to be torn apart with evil. Rest beautiful soul in that divine refuge and find the good things from God’s hand.

Hopeful In The Dark

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So I let one of my furry girls out into the rainy, early morning darkness and at this time of year I’m always afraid of skunks that might be lurking in the dark corners. One episode with a skunk can turn a whole world upside down in a matter of seconds as I found out a few years back! It was not fun and I dealt with skunk for a long while after the fact. This particular furry girl is getting up in years and at 14 doesn’t see or hear well, but is still pretty spunky in her actions, so she can be very illusive and I can’t call her back quickly, if she decides to run off. So ~ I let her go prancing off into the darkness as I stood holding my breath and hoping for the best. While waiting with teeth clenched in the tense stillness a beautiful chorus of early birds from nearby trees, presented their sweet, morning aubade for a brand new day. Their song occupied my mind and made the anxious wait just a little sweeter. In a few seconds I thought of a lot of things…. Oh Yeah ~ the world is in a mess for sure, and we don’t know just what’s around the next government corner or any other corner for that matter and just what does lurk in the darkness waiting to take us down in defeat, but it’s a beautiful world just the same. It’s a frightening journey sometimes, ~ this journey of life! And it’s difficult to stay focused on the good of it all ~ if there even is any good at all, because some days just seem like that. It’s a beautiful world if we see it with our soul eyes and through the eyes of a God who we know cares about us and for us. He’s graciously given us the beauty of things created for our enjoyment while we wait it out! But while we wait it out, let’s stay out of the dark corners as much as possible with ourselves and our minds and our worries and our cares and our concerns and our issues. Instead of going there, step out with God to the front porch and listen to the birds of His fabulous creation sing their sweet and beautiful song into our soul ears. Those same ears that hear Him speak sweet promises, gentle comforts, and awesome peace into our pain and brokenness.

My little furry girl returned just fine from around that frightening, dark turn and came bounding back to the door to safety. I picked her up to carry her down the stairs since she doesn’t see well enough on her own and all was good once again. No skunks, no issues and thankfully not a problem this time. Isn’t that what God does for us when we wander off into the complicated areas and into issues and make a huge mess of things, then come bounding back to Him? His unconditional love carries us with grace over the rough places and the uneven steps where we don’t see clearly in our humanness and ah yes ~ back to safety once again. Aren’t we thankful for His mercy? That’s what He does! I love how He does it.

Deuteronomy 23: 26, 27
“There is none like the God of Jeshurun, Who rides the heavens to your help, And through the skies in His majesty. The eternal God is a dwelling place, And underneath are the everlasting arms; And He drove out the enemy from before you, And said, ‘Destroy!’

Psalm 90:2
Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
