When You Can’t See the Light, See the Son

“Light is sweet and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.”

Ecclesiastes 11:7.

Oh, how we love the light after the bleak and after the dreary! When skies are clouded with gray, oh yes, how we love the light then! Oh, how we cherish the rays of the sun when they win and fight their way through tough clouds and how we remember those rays of sunlight with favor in the storms and in the darkness of our lives. Yeah, in those desperately, dark days. sometimes we just want to throw in the towel and cease to run and forget to stand, don’t we?

Yeah, those just ‘give up” kind of days where we, for some reason, just can’t even stand on the promises of God! Some days and some seasons, It’s difficult to stand for the Truth, to stand for what’s right, to stand for the Light, or to stand for anything at all, isn’t it? No light, no sun, no hope, no motivation and who cares anyway? Just give it all up and dissipate into oblivion. It seems so much easier and safer that way!

Beautiful soul, are you ‘standing’ strong still or has uninvited trouble sideswiped you off stance, off course, run you off-track and mislead you out of whack? Has your world spiralled downward with all manner of distractions, and taken you along for the plummet? Yes, even when the sun shines and the days are good, we don’t see the light of it always, because too much stuff is in the way of our belief and too much dark covers our insight and blinds our pathway.

“They have eyes, but they see not, ears, but they hear not”

Jeremiah 5: 21.

We cringe, we fear, we recoil and withdraw because even in the sunlight the mind is bleak and dreary some days. Well, you and I and we and us ~ When we can’t find the sun, it’s crucial that we look to the Son and the Savior to find His love gracing us even in the dark. Find His care watching over us, even in the night. Find His awesome grace sustaining us over the hard places and the difficult challenges. Find the Truth in His Word to light our way and His protection to guard our minds, our hearts and our souls.

Yeah, in the dark, when the sun isn’t shining for the time, we must seek Him, find Him and follow Him! We dare not wait for life to be perfect and light before we determine to see the sweet, sweet light of Jesus’ face in the inclement weather of life itself.

The writer of Ecclesiastes wisely states in 11: 4,

“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.”

We truly have a need to look beyond the cloud and see the Son, even in our darkest hour because when we see the Son, the sun will shine again and once again hope will rise up within our souls.

Walkin’ In The Light?

Psalm 119:105
” Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

Scripture defies the darkness and it’s pages exude references to the radiance of Christ, the Light of the World. John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

During the Festival of Shelters, sixteen golden bowls were filled with oil and lit. Jesus stood beneath them in the inner courts of the temple, in a section known as the Treasury, John 8:20 and said that He was now the source of the Light.

The Light of Jesus brings salvation, not just to Israel, but to us, the world, regardless of who we are, race or location. As Christ Ones abiding in His words, in obedience to His perspective and guidance we will not only walk in His beautiful light, we ‘become’ as light reflecting the radiance of Christ in our character. Phil 2:14,15.
Let’s be honest and ask ourselves a point-blank question. Is our light shining? Is it radiantly obvious in our actions? In our behaviours? In our countenance? Is it shining forth to light up the dark corners for others or do the batteries weaken somewhat as life happens and takes us with it? Yeah, maybe we need to recharge before the God of our salvation and the Christ who stood under the sixteen golden bowls of oil lighting the temple and point-blank stated in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” NLT Study Bible.

Philippians 2:14, “Do everything without complaining and arguing. So that no one can criticize you. Live clean, innocent lives, as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people.”

What’s All The Noise About Hope?

dsc_5793

So, what’s all the noise and fuss about lighting this candle of hope at Advent season? What’s hope anyway in this bad, sad world of ours? What’s up with hope anyways in the wars, the riots, the killings, the shootings, the earthquakes, and all the ‘not so great things’ that happen daily in our own lives and in our own worlds? Hope? Is it some pie in the sky crutch to help Christ ones over the rough patches or some kind of brainwashing that has believers totally running off the reality track? What is it? Where is it and how on the wide side of the earth do we find hope within a world such as this? A world in such utter disarray and chaos? Is this thing Hope, really for real or just some word tossed about to get us by and give us some kind of false idea that all will be better by and by?dsc_6298

Yeah, it is for real! It resides in the hearts and minds of Christ’s disciples ~ in the hearts and minds of His followers. Hope resides there because His followers have tasted of the healing and forgiveness and faithfulness of the Lord and witnessed His hand of goodness even through the storms, the losses, the trials and the fires. Prophecies foretold of this wondrous hope splashed all through the pages of scripture, of this One who would step down from heaven and enter as the only solution, into a world crushed by sin and torn apart by it’s ruthless destruction. He would enter as a babe, so tender, so helpless, so human yet so divine! He would enter humbly and be laid in a manger as the Light of world! As the Saviour of the world! Yes, let’s light a candle to symbolize this Hope for the world! Prophecy foretold the Good news of His coming to take away the ugly sin-stain of mankind and heal their land, their hearts and their souls. Isaiah’s words to Hezekiah in Isaiah 40: 1-5 were words of comfort for the people of Israel at a very difficult time. It was a message of encouragement with the good news of forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration. A message still so real and relevant for us today as we sit in a broken world with broken lives ravaged by sin! And ah, yes, beautiful soul, He did come! He came as a babe to live, and walk among us and die and yet rise to defeat death so that our own hearts can be healed and forgiven and made new because the Light of the World came into the world! He came to seek and to save that which is lost. That’s you and I and because of this great event in history, we don’t have to continue to live in the darkness and the ruins of sin that so easily entangle us and make the world the bad, sad world that it is.

Oh yes, the hope is real and for ‘very’ real for sure!! There is Hope laced throughout the brokenness and the darkness of this dismal world, in the form of a Saviour, the Light of the world.

Isaiah 40: 1 – 5
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the LORD’s hand double for all her sins. A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the LORD ; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.”

John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Proverbs 13:12
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

Dawn In The Dark

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So it’s another day and your heart has been broken yet one more time, only this time not in two ~ this time shattered into a kazillion pieces leaving you feeling like an empty soul robbed of all that you thought was at least a glimmer of hope. Where is God when you need Him? Where is God when your world has taken a Humpty Dumpty tumble off the wall and your dreams have run out of road! Where is He when your pie in the sky turns out to a mud pie and your light at the end of tunnel flickers and goes dark? Broken promises, empty lies, false accusations and on and on it goes and they bombard like a steam engine churning it’s wheels and leaving you in a thick fog of unsettled and uneasy. Questions? Oh so many! Answers? None! ~ and that lump that fills your throat, are those big, unrelenting enemies of worry, fear and doubt that’s come to prey on your emotions. These aggressive visitors refuse to remove shoes first. They just trample in carrying all their debris right into the middle of your life! They disrupt the very core of your peaceful being in mere minutes leaving heads spinning and stomachs churning.

Ah, it’s now we remember beautiful soul, that dawn hides in this dungeon of darkness ~ yes where you are right now is where the blessing is hidden and the light is there if we but turn on the power of prayer at our disposal. David knew darkness all too well. He tried to hide but knew he couldn’t hide from the all-seeing, all-knowing God! In Psalm 139: 7 he asks God a pointed question “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens you are there. If I make my bed in the depths You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast.”

Isaiah 42: 16 And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them.
Isaiah 42: 16
And I will lead the blind in a way that they do not know, in paths that they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I do, and I do not forsake them.

All is well and will be ok because God is there ~ right smack dab in the middle of that dark ~ and He’s with you and He has you and He has your issues and even though what broke your soul and shattered your world didn’t come in a pretty package ~ it did come with painful benefits that allow for spiritual growth and maturity. So, dear and beautiful soul, search that darkness through prayer to find the blessing of the dawn there and rise on its sweet and delicate wings, up and out and over the circumstances. Say with David in verse 12 to His God and your God who cares very deeply, “Even the darkness will not be dark to You; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to You.” What an awesome thought ~ that our darkness is light to God.

So, let those shattered pieces fall where they may, but you, beautiful soul, you take heart now, for your darkness is as light to the God who has your back.
