Glass Castles

There’s an old Gospel song, that been around for years, with words that go something like this..

“I woke up this mornin’ feelin’ fine.  I woke up with Heaven on my mind.”

It’s a kind of  ‘feel good’ song, the kind that makes you want to clap your hands and tap the foot to it’s fun, little tune.

Although I woke up with that song on my mind, I didn’t wake up to that feeling on my heart this morning!  I woke up to a rather different beat today in the key of minor.  Mine was a whirling mind, churning over the stupid stench of sin in this world. How it’s rampant and everywhere, and so sadly in all places where we don’t want to find it.  Where we think, in our naïve and simple trusting spirits, it would never exist.  It’s not just in that Garden of Eden, where it all began,  but it’s in our present-day gardens of sweet nothings, where the old serpent slithers.  He crawls so slyly into our homes, our workplaces, our schools and into our churches!  His egotistic,  narcissistic character gains only a slight foothold yet begins to manipulate, coerce, groom, gain our favour and ultimately tear down even the elect, leaving his victim alone and broken and so many others reeling in anguish, mistrust, bitterness and disappointment over whatever goes down.

Sin plays its game well, not smart but well. I’ve witnessed its evil gain a foothold in churches, where leaders would rather turn a blind eye than rock the boat with truth.  The thing is, to surface the reality of wrong with truth in confrontation only serves to bring on a form of politics, gaining of power, support and a form of horrendous persecution.  Yeah, not the ‘gallows’ type of threat and physical torture but the power, politics, gossip, lies, threats, and unbelief, paired with emotional and verbal abuse is a form of gallows that kill by crushing the spirit and grinding it into the dirt. It’s a form of abuse not becoming to the ‘spiritual’ leaders dishing it out.  Yet it happens!  Sin rules our cultures our societies, our world and sadly, our own lives if we succumb to self and as the prophet Jeremiah, reminds us of our wretched state, through the LORDS own words of wisdom in Jeremiah 17:9,

This is what the LORD says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”

So, friends, in our wretched sin-sick world, in our wretched sin-sick state, only God knows just how deceitful we can be.   Yes, it touches our lives, our families and our ministries! It plants its seed of lies, and deceit and builds pedestals of pride with power and money and off it goes on a wild tangent in cahoots with a wicked heart or two in tow, beckoning to its every call and bowing to its every selfish whim.

Bingo! And don’t we know that glass castles shatter and pedestals crack and crumble and proud hearts are bent low to breathe the dust of the ground.  And don’t we know the lights go out and the power goes out!  And don’t we know that the money looses its luster to a sickening stench as the whole truth unfolds.

Yeah, it’s a wretched world held in the grip of sin and what do you know, it’s not just those who have joined the ranks of fame and popularity,  who we point fingers at, but it’s us in the thick of it, just like everyone else.  “We” are the sinners with the deceptive hearts, no one better, more righteous than anyone else.  We’re all in this together, all with the same potential to sin, all in the same sinful world, with the same sinner’s heart in the same little boat struggling to stay afloat, with the need of the same Saviour that brings the powerful gospel message of light and Truth. A message of power that doesn’t change or go out or lose luster just because a glass castle cracks and shatters, a pedestal crumbles and someone falls so far short of what we believed even possible.

Sin?  Yeah it’s out there and it’s in us and Isaiah reminds us that it’s part and parcel of all of us, when he pens the words of Isaiah 53:6

“We all like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

So, when our minds swirl in confusion over stuff that goes down within our circles of influence.  When the power goes out in our churches, our families, our schools, and within those of leadership, who we thought we knew and so highly respected, we can know their fall, our fall, or anyone’s stumble doesn’t change the power of God and the message of the Gospel.  That message of saving power that cleanses a heart of repentance with unconditional love, mercy and amazing grace will stoop down into the depths of stench and muck and lift us out to carry each one of us who ask, to new heights in the heavenlies!

So, it turns out whatever has your heart wrenching today, our Lord knows well the hurt, pain and disappointment of your soul and though the temptation to give up is very real, our part is to stay faithful even to the end, even when and even if the glass castle shatters and threatens to take our faith into the garden of sin and doubt.

Yeah, I get that it’s a narrow way to walk but it’s safe there in His keeping.  It’s the safest place you can be when the winds howl and storms blow! So you and I and we and us let’s accept that glass castles shatter, that pedestals fall, that power goes out and still realize with every once of faith that we can muster, that Sin will sadly have its way in this world,  but our Saviour is still the victory One and still ‘all for us’, not against us.  Let’s be challenged to keep our eyes fixed on the Sovereign God in charge and not on the man, the pedestals or the sin that can so easily entangle.

“Strait is the gate and narrow is the way, which leads unto life.” Life meaning salvation.

Matthew 7:14

A Discerning Spirit

Many voices call these days to distract us from the voice of Truth! Voices that capture our attention and steer us wrong. Voices that can sound powerfully strong, right and good and yet, like the sly voice whispering in the Garden of Eden, the snake slithers into our garden and whispers as well.

It’s that voice that tickles the ears and says “It’s ok” and it’s that voice that quickly calls us under its influence, and into its agenda just because it can. Just because it’s powerful and good at what it does. It calls with lies that we won’t hear with human ears! It calls with promises that it won’t keep! It whispers the half-truth and so we hear just the part we want to hear. Let’s be challenged to be on our guard against the sadness and dangers of the evils of our day surrounding us on all fronts. Be in the Word, check it out. Breathe it in! Sleep on it every nightfall and digest it every waking moment! Learn it, Live it, and speak it. Tuck in your heart, your pocket, your purse, your car! Let it be who you are! Christ in you the Hope of Glory!

1 John 4:1 reminds us to not fall into the trap of everything we hear from all manner of voices out there and fall into their web of destruction! Don’t be drawn in by their power and succumb to their authority, but rather check everything out with the Father of Lights first and foremost. Run it by Him and then listen with a spiritual understanding to discern right from the wrong.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”Yeah, watch those who have taken power and speak with supremacy.

Boot Camps Of Life Training

Hard times come and go, don’t they? When they come they hit hard and fast and our first thoughts are not always of the enemy and how he gets in to wreak havoc with our souls. No, we don’t always think of his sly techniques and his outright lies whispered into our hearts! We don’t often see clearly just what’s happening above our heads in the unseen world around us. I find it so intriguing in Matthew 4: 4, that Jesus, after he had been baptized by John and stamped with God’s approval, through His Spirit descending like a dove to light on His shoulder, was then led by this same Spirit of God into the wilderness to be trained for spiritual duty. How was He trained? Yeah, through fasting and prayer but also through rigorous demands of the Devil, the Father of lies, the enemy himself. This perfect, spotless, sinless One, confirmed by God to be His beloved Son, was taken to the cleaners after he was taken to the wilderness, to be weakened with hunger! Today, our old enemy was our Lord’s enemy as well for those forty days and nights as he tempted Christ to show His credentials and turn stones to bread to satisfy His hunger. Jesus answered him well, in verse 4,
“Man does not live on bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”
So devil, that didn’t go so well, did it? Second round then and a visit to the Holy City, to stand on the highest point of the temple and then, the sly guy that he is, our enemy quoted scripture from Psalm 91:11, in verse 6, as he blatantly tempted Jesus to throw Himself down,
“For it is written:

“He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike Your foot against a stone.”

Ahh, but Jesus also had an answer, “It is also written:

“Do not put the Lord Your God to the test.”

Yet, a third temptation was put forth from a very high mountain with an offer of all the splendour of the Kingdoms of the world and again Jesus answered, this time with a rebuke,
“Away from me Satan! for it is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”

So when we’re on a rough road and the way daunting and we find ourselves at our weakest point, weary and worn from the boot camps of life’s training and when selfish passions make their play for us, remember who the enemy really is. Remember he was brash enough to quote scripture to Jesus in His wilderness and in His weakness, to get his way and ultimately take Our Lord down.

He does the same to those that God has called forth and given His stamp of approval.  The enemy prowls around seeking whom he may devour but, At Christ’s word to leave, the devil left and angels came and ministered unto Jesus.  God’s Spirit leads us into some troublesome times to prepare us for troublesome times, and we can know if He’s taken us to it, He’ll take us through it and what a glorious moment when He sends His angels to minister! It’s a glorious time when God’s angels care so much for our weakened, beautiful souls, to lift us up!

So Many Voices ~ So Many Lies

So many voices and so much chaos in that head of yours and they’ve wrapped their icy fingers around your heart and now it’s fear that nips at your heels and tugs at your heart strings and makes you feel just quite uneasy about it all. Yeah, it’s pretty loud and it’s pretty confusing and what’s right and what isn’t? The media paints a pretty bleak picture of government events with the upcoming election and takes us on a long, winding road of deceit and lies and if we can find a shred of truth anywhere these days it’s still up for grabs as to whether or not it’s for real. So whatever it is in our life that’s so perplexing, what do we do? To hide our heads in the sand and pretend troubles are non-existent, isn’t the answer because they surely are a part of our world so we can’t be so passive and naive as to live in denial. So what’s the answer for our complexities? The Psalmist offers counsel to those in need of protection and safety. To those in need of hope and shelter from the storm, when he pens, Psalm 91:1 “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.”

and then ~ Beautiful Soul ~
Psalm 17:8
“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,…”

Psalm 36:7
“How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

Psalm 31:20
‘In the cover of your presence you hide them from the plots of men; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues.”

Psalm 27:5
“For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.”
dsc_5522
Psalm 61:3-4
“For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! Selah

Psalm 121:5
“The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.”

Yeah, beautiful soul, the place to be these days and in the hour of trial, struggle, storm, hardship and confusion is smack dab in the awesome presence of the Sovereign God as the apple of His eye. Hiding under the protection of His wing away from the strife of tongues and the plots of men! He is our keeper and our stronghold. Let’s take refuge where the only true refuge can be found. In His tent of shelter from the day of trouble and in the shadow of the Almighty.
