Self On The Shelf

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So ~ you and I, we don’t need to live one more day entrapped in our selfish ambition! Ok, so it’s one of those ‘things’ of which we dare not speak. Who among us like to talk about it ~ and the thought that we might be one of those selfish creatures just doesn’t sit well with anyone! Oh yeah, we see it in others but in ourselves? Yeah, sadly, it’s just as real in our lives as it’s real in those close to us. Why do we see it so easily in others and look inwardly through a blind eye? It’s the nature of the beast and we just do!

You and I and we and us ~ well, we have a way of twisting the truth about it don’t we? Yeah, first of all we don’t call it that, rather it’s our right to express it, or to go after it or fight for whatever it is we want to get at all cost. Or we just deserve that break today don’t we? ~ and sometimes yes we do! Oh yeah, Sometimes we really do need a break without being driven by guilt, but to trample on toes to get everything we think we deserve ~ well let’s just call it what it is ~ boring, cruel selfish ambition!! Ouch!

But beautiful soul, It’s just there ~ in us, and so often doesn’t it raise it’s ugly head and bluntly and blatently shout out it’s obnoxious presence? Selfish living deceives us into truly believing that having it our way is freedom. Freedom to be who we are but truly it’s entrapment places us in bondage to who we are; nothing but poor sinful, creatures obsessed with ourselves and our stuff and yeah we’re spiralling quickly to self destruction. How much more entrapped can we be, when we continually want what we want without contentment? Thankfully God has made a way for us to escape the greed and the icy fingers of want wrapped in ingratitude and thanklessness. Paul reminds the Galatians and us as believers, in Galatians 5:1, that Christ has set them (us) free through faith in Himself, from their sin and so they were free indeed; no longer in slavery to rules and laws and performance. Further, In Galatians 5: 13, Paul goes on to say, “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, (selfishness) but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.”

Our wonderful freedom in Christ, through our faith in Him and through His grace, is not a licence to sin but to serve God and others. It’s our escape, preventative and our only absolute solution to self destruction associated with selfish desires and sinful living. Serving God and ‘Self’ can’t happen. The two can’t coincide. So, with all the honesty you and me can muster deep within ourselves, let’s ask point blank, “Who is being served today?” God desires your beautiful soul to serve Him alone and find how sweet it is to leave ‘self’ on the shelf.

Galatians 5: 24
“Those who belong to Christ Jesus, have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to His cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Sprit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.”

2 Timothy 3: 1-5
“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”

Bittersweet Lies

When my son was a little fella, I found a square of bitter, baking chocolate etched with tiny, teeth marks in the corner, tossed into his garbage can. He was known for his mischievous ways, so even though I knew his plan to eat sweetly and secretly had turned very bitter indeed, I asked him if he had gotten into my baking chocolate. He overlooked the facts confirmed by the bite marks and denied it! I knew better and was quite upset to see such a little one tell a lie, and wondered just what we were in for in the years ahead, but even more crucial than my disappointment was his own deception. Oh how deceived he was to think all was well, when it wasn’t well at all ‘cuz one who deceives others will live a lie, but will never deceive a God of Truth. As we all fall short of God’s commandments, he had broken a principle and a commandment of God’s law, “Thou Shalt Not Lie.” He thought by lying he could break even, avoid reprimand and get away with it but those tiny teeth marks told the whole story with clear evidence! Lies are sweet for the moment when they portray innocence but a bitter poison to the soul.

How true in our world of truth versus lies; The evidence of a lie will not stand against the Truth. A man’s lies will entrap Him and catch him in his own web. . In Psalm 119: 29 the Psalmist pleads “Keep me from lying to myself.” Self deception is a fruit of sinful, human, nature, that comes back to sting and bite and lead us to self destruction. Access to God’s Word of Truth is not a right but a privilege made available to us through God’s grace. It’s the only cure for the plague of self deception and the restoration of self destruction. So..beautiful soul, stay true to truth today! Don’t succumb to even a little, white lie because the evil one and the father of lies lives there ready to snag you up and entrap you in the sticky, web of deceit and the more you try to escape the more that sticky web entraps. Today then, just make the wrong right, and trust a God of truth to sustain you in a world of deception, where lies are the norm and truth the minority.

Psalm 119:30
“I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws.”

Breaking Bad Or Breaking Free?

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

Bad Habits? Got any? They can take you down roads of calamity and ruin! I’m sure we could all pull out a string of many colors from our pocket if we consider things like worry, fear, envious and negative thoughts, etc, etc. Just bad habits, but sin, nevertheless! Things that could could so easily be dismissed by saying “It’s just the way I am.”

Habits are good if used to serve others, bad if used to serve ‘self’. They’re born out of selfishness and once established they become a very difficult thing to break free from. God knows it and out of His divine, unconditional love for us, doesn’t expect perfection from His children, anymore than we expect perfection from ours. He is understanding of our heart and sees deeply into the motive. He knows our character and our heart’s desire to truly please Him and in His compassion wants to free us from the bondage of guilt, even when we fail. When we fall into sin, He grants grace and forgiveness every time we ask. When we come yet again, as a whipped puppy before Him, it’s like He holds a record card in His hand with a blank page and every single time He says, “I see no record of your wrong. Go and sin no more!! John 8: 10, 11 “Straightening up, Jesus said to her, “Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more.” Only Christ indwelling us can free us from the selfish sin and bad habits that enslave us.

For the journey, His grace and favor are vast and abundant enough to keep us walking in His light and Truth in spite of bad habits. With God’s help we keep pressing on towards the goal, in the knowledge of the Righteousness of Christ, forgetting those things which are behind as Paul recorded in Philippians 3: 13 – 15 from his prison cell…

“Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you;…”

David expresses his complete confidence in his all powerful, all knowing, God of the universe. There is nothing hidden from His brilliant creator. He had complete assurance that God knew him as he was. Inside and out I guess we can say. As God knew David’s heart, He knows ours ~ what makes us tick, what riles us and what we find delight in. We’re His creation! He made us to be who we are: faults, weaknesses, strengths and all. He saw everything He made and it was good!! You are made in His image! You are made well and according to God’s standards of excellence, you have His stamp of approval and a life – time warranty for your allotted years on this earth and a glorious life eternal with your Savior.

Ok then ~ What do we do when life throws it’s left hooks at us? When it cuts us off at the pass and sideswipes us off our feet? What do we do when we find ourselves in the pit of despair, in bondage to sin, addictions, depression, discouragement, anger, fear, worry or pain?

When something breaks we call on the manufacturer, the one who put it together and knows it’s intricate workings from the inside out. Someone who can assess and evaluate what needs attention and then gets right to the heart of the problem. Friends, when we are broken, down cast, fearful, sad, remorseful and running on empty, we have a maker ~ a manufacturer who knows us from the ground level up. He formed us, He knows, knows, knows us and every detail affecting us. He can get right to the ‘heart’ of the problem. His life-time warranty is our confidence that He can fix it, no strings attached, if we but take ourselves to Him. He will make it work out for our good and His glory, under His skillful hand!

Like David let’s find our assurance in our brilliant creator. The one who made us, can heal us, cleanse us, forgive us, fix us and bless us. ❤ ❤ ❤

Our God is brilliant and even in our greatest thoughts of Him, He is greater still. His works are wonderful!! We can know that full well.
