Level Ground

Psalm 143:10

“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.”

I find it so interesting that David asks for God to lead him on level ground. Level ground is well-balanced and peaceful. Isn’t that the heart of God’s will for our lives? Balanced and peaceful even amidst difficulties. It’s so easy to over react to suffering and unfairness isn’t it? It’s so easy to be overcome with the desire to retaliate against those who have harmed us with words, gossip or cheap undermining. David knew he was being pursued yet he put His trust in God’s unfailing love.

It was here that he would know God’s peace, serenity, grace, protection and mercy. Do we, like David, know God’s will for us in times of distress? We need to ask God to balance our lives and bless us with these divine quality attributes found in Him, so that when danger lurks and enemies pursue, we remain balanced in God’s unfailing love and protection. There is no need to fight. No need to run anywhere but under the shelter of His wing. Now that is level ground! When we hide there, nothing else matters!

Victorious Temptation

Tough seasons come and go don’t they? When they come they hit hard and huge and our first thoughts are not always of the enemy and how he gets in to wreak havoc with our souls. No, we don’t always think of his sly techniques and his outright lies whispered into our hearts! We don’t often see clearly just what’s happening above our heads in the unseen world around us. I find it so intriguing in Matthew 4: 4, that Jesus, after he had been baptized by John and stamped with God’s approval, through His Spirit descending like a dove to light on His shoulder, was then led by this same Spirit of God into the wilderness to be trained for spiritual duty. How was He trained? Yeah, through fasting and prayer but also through rigorous demands of the Devil, the enemy himself. This perfect, spotless, sinless One, confirmed by God to be His beloved Son, was taken to the cleaners after he was taken to the wilderness, to be weakened with hunger! Our old enemy was our Lord’s enemy as well, those forty days and nights as he tempted Christ to show His credentials and turn stones to bread to satisfy hunger. Jesus answered him well, in verse 4, “Man does not live on bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.” So devil, that didn’t go so well, did it?

Second round then and a visit to the Holy City, to stand on the highest point of the temple and then, sly guy that he is, our enemy quoted scripture from Psalm 91:11, in verse 6, as he blatantly tempted Jesus to throw Himself down, “For it is written:

“He will command His angels concerning You, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike Your foot against a stone.”

Ahh, but Jesus also had an answer, “It is also written: “Do not put the Lord Your God to the test.”

Yet, a third temptation was put forth from a very high mountain with an offer of all the splendour of the Kingdoms of the world and again Jesus answered, this time with a rebuke, “Away from me Satan! for it is written, Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.”

So when we’re on a rough road and the way daunting and we find ourselves at our weakest point, weary and worn from the boot camps of life’s training and then, when selfish passions make their play for us, remember who the enemy really is! Remember he was even brash enough to quote scripture to Jesus in His wilderness weakness, to get his way and ultimately attempt to take Our Lord down.

He’s roamin’ about now! He does the same to those that God has called forth and stamped His approval on. The enemy prowls around seeking whom he may devour but, At Christ’s word to leave, the devil left and angels came and ministered unto Him. So yeah, God’s own spirit leads us into some troublesome times but only to prepare us for troublesome times, and we can know if He’s taken us to it, He’ll take us through it and what a glorious moment when He sends His angels to minister! Oh yeah, it’s a glorious time when God’s angels care so much for our weakened, beautiful souls.

As God Is Our Judge

Isaiah 33:22
“For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us.”

The Lord’s rule is a part of His divine order and as Creator of all things His rule is just and righteous. He is the Ancient of Days and has served as law giver and judge from the beginning of time. He will continue to maintain His sovereign position until the end of time.

The God who oversees our actions, behaviors and motives in the beginning, sees them at the end. It’s frustrating and possibly frightening when medical reports get lost in the shuffle of transient doctors and a personal, medical history disappears into the archives only to leave a new doctor without the whole story of our health. God isn’t transient. He doesn’t move, or change. He doesn’t lose our information and our history doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. He knows us well! He knows the end from the beginning and will judge us accordingly! Our King, our Messiah our Ancient of Days will reign and will usher in a just world. He is our saving grace, our protection and our salvation. His Spirit will change a heart and one day will transform the world into a place of righteousness, justice and peace.

I think this is so important to grasp a hold of in light of our forgiveness, and /or our desire to retaliate and get even with sweet revenge. We so often think that we sit alone in our hurts and unfair dealings. As God knows our hearts, motives, and actions, we can be assured that He also knows the heart motives and actions of those who have offended, betrayed, spread rumors or lied about us. He doesn’t loose track of who does what, and why they do it? God is just and righteous. He will grant mercy and justice when and where it’s needed, as well as judge the unforgiving spirit of ourselves or another. This knowledge of the just God should take a burden off our shoulders. Our offender/s will not get off free under our Sovereign God’s rule. Then again, nor will we if we are to blame but live in denial.

Blue Days?

Do the blues have you down? Stuff on the horizon needing to be faced and here you are just feeling a bit under the weather? A little fear filled and apprehensive? No confidence? No courage? No motivation to face the moment, the day or the week ahead?

Yeah, it hits all of us at one time or another. In moments like these we have to hear Jesus say to us as He taught those listening in His great Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 6: 31, 32b, 33,

“So don’t worry about these things, saying ‘What shall we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?…Your heavenly Father already knows yours needs. “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”

That word ‘everything’ means all of it…even that stuffed baggage carried from pillar to post on a daily basis. That hurt! That broken spirit! Broken heart, Broken dream. That rejection, malignment, accusation, unfair treatment, and ridicule! Oh yes, all of it and you know it well don’t you? And we don’t need a GPS to find it. it lives with us until we give it over to a God who understands and cares so deeply for our needs.

So, Beautiful one, say it out loud and know that our Saviour who spoke to the multitude on the mountainside speaks personally into your heart this morning, yeah, even on this blue day, and when He says “Trust me” for all that stuff on the horizon, just do it! ❤

"Sing to the Lord! Give Praise to the Lord!
He rescues the needly from the hands of wicked."

Jeremiah 20:13
