The Cross And Beyond

DSC00077 carnival lights p 2
So today ~ for all the anxiety pulling at your heart and nipping at your heels, shake it off! Rise above it! Float over it! It’s a weight that you can not carry and a burden that you can not bear! These hard place are not yours to think about for their only pot holes that trip you up and block you in your journey on life’s way.  Anxieties steal your hope, rob your joy and take your peace.  So beautiful soul, Shake them off!

Look today to the gift of the cross!  That horrendous place of agonizing death and blood shed on that Calvary hill where our Lord took our place and freed us from the oppression of sin and all that goes with it in this life.  Look to the cross and celebrate that scandalous event of blood shed, and know that it was all for us, for our forgiveness and for our freedom from the bondage that has us so anchored down. Go on ~ celebrate the cross of Christ for what it is and what it means to our wretched, beautiful souls, but then look beyond its agony to see its beauty and the hope of heaven that it brings to those of us who believe. Ah yes, beautiful one, those anxieties, those hard places, those difficult steps of the day, are all part of this sinful life but not to be handled by us. So give them to the one who did the difficult for us and carried the cross!  To the One who handled the cross and managed the rejection, the pain, and the ultimate death at the hands of human brutality. Jesus is He who died selflessly and conquered death and sin and shame and ~ beyond death, rose to victor over it! It’s glorious isn’t it? So you see, we win! We do, you and I! We’re the winners over the rough spots, over the sin, over the snares, over the pot holes, over the hopelessness. The anxieties? God holds them in safe keeping for you. He’ll lock them up and work them out. He offers a scenic detour around all of that stuff and beautiful soul, it’s a beautiful view. One that you don’t want to miss. So today, Look to the cross, but then beyond it, look to its beauty; that of the hope of eternity and press on keeping your eyes fixed on Jesus the author of our faith!

“Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

To Beyond The Moon And Back

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So what now? We’ve mourned, in both sadness and joyful celebration, the cross of our Lord, and His sacrificial death; whipped and beaten, hands and feet pierced, brow pierced, and side torn, yet His arms outstretched in an outlandish, unspeakable love for us to beyond the moon and back to our wretched selves. Ahh ~ let’s not deny the risen Lord and the empty grave where He defied death, defeated death and now lives to offer life. What do we do with that? Well, we can choose to believe in Him, living with Him in freedom or ~ we can choose to live without Him, crushed by the weight of our guilt! And ~ His love is so great that He gives freedom even for that choice. He will seek us though! He will search for us ~ and just as He found Adam and Eve hiding in their shame over their failure, He will find your hiding place! He will beat you at your game of Hide and Seek! He loves you that much to care enough! He will find us weeping in our guilt, paralyzed in our fear, weakened in our humanness, sick in our sin, beaten by our own schemes, whipped by our dates with the world, on our skid rows of addictions and oh so lost ~ so lost in our hopelessness! But that’s why He’s there ~ That’s why He found you ~ to offer Hope just for those despairing times and His tender, loving arms that reached to the moon and the stars and universe and back to the empty grave ~ reach out to you to offer that sweet fragrance of grace and mercy that forgives it all.. He paid the price for all that stuff so that we don’t have to wallow in it’s fatal quick sand. Take Him up on His offer. Take advantage of His offered opportunity of salvation! He died for that ~ and it’s not too late to begin to really live and to live for Him!

Galatians 2: 20
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Between Good Friday And Easter Sunday

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

So Christ is in the grave but only for a day, so let go of the sadness because the outcome is out of this world. In His resurrection He brought Hope to life and into life. There’s hope now for every hurt, every pain, every sadness and all the disappointments that plague you and stalk you and haunt you and hunt you down. Those things ~ heavy on your heart can now be given over to the One who defeated the biggest enemy of all time ~ death!! Because Christ defeated death, He defeated all of the nitty, gritty other stuff too ~ and you can live free from the fear of it all, and the sting of it all, because He lives and He’s got you and if you’ve got Him you don’t need to fret and stew over the big stuff. It won’t all disappear but He’ll take the weight and heal the hurt, and mend the brokenness and carry your load over the rough spots. So between Good Friday and Easter Sunday rejoice because Hope lives in the victorious risen Lord and in your downer than down days well ~ hope lies there too.

1 Corinthians 15: 54 – 58
“So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
“Oh Death, where is your sting?
O Hades, where is your victory?”
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

The Cross For Us

Little Thoughts For Big Days
Little Thoughts For Big Days

Behold the man upon the cross, with the weight of the world’s sin upon His back. His shoulders heavy with the excruciating pain of it all. The sin on His back was more painful to bear than the nails piercing His hands and feet and the sword that sliced His slide. He who knew no sin ~ had never done any wrong ~ had never known a selfish moment or had a bad day because of His attitude, was tormented by those that were governed by their sinful nature in this sinful world. He was tortured and brutally beaten by them, yet He died for them and took their sin upon Himself. The Roman soldiers did it and the mobs cried “Crucify Him,” but so did we because in those moments of darkness and pain, Christ died for the past, present and future world of sinful man. Them and us and those to come!

Sin, the world’s curse and man’s inheritance. It lurks in the nitty, gritty corners of our lives ~ those “everywhere” places that distract and lure us in to pleasantries for the moment and into guilt after that; chains us in its grip of bondage and is relentless to let go. Yeah, Christ was beaten for that. Tortured for that! Died for that! It’s Him hanging on the cross for that; He took the penalty of death for them, His accusers and for us ~ just as guilty as they! His Crown of death became a crown of life ~ for them ~ for us! The thief hanging on one side of Christ took Him up on His offer and asked for forgiveness in His final moments and received a pardon before succumbing to death! The other thief hung there, still determined in his pride, and robbed himself of the opportunity of a lifetime. He died in his dreadful, sinful condition, refusing to give in! Christ couldn’t help him because he wouldn’t ask! Which side of Christ are you on as we approach this so very sad, yet so very beautiful celebration of the Cross of Christ?

Good Friday

John 19: 29 – 30
“A jar of vinegar was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.”
